Vitamin C is the most-purchased single supplement in Africa and one of the easiest to obtain from food. Its real value lies in adequate daily intake rather than in the very high doses that dominate the shelf.
What is vitamin c?
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin required for collagen synthesis, immune function, wound healing and iron absorption from plant foods. Humans cannot make it.
Adult requirements are modest — under 100 mg a day — and are met by a few servings of fruit and vegetables. Guava, baobab, citrus, mango and dark leafy greens are all excellent regional sources.
Traditional and regional use
Regional foods such as baobab pulp, guava, mango, oranges and leafy greens have always supplied vitamin C. Supplementation is a modern habit, not a traditional one.

Vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy, and correcting deficiency is unambiguous.
For colds, reviews find that routine supplementation does not prevent them in the general population but may shorten duration slightly; regular high-intensity exercisers show clearer effects.
Very high doses do not produce proportionally higher blood levels — absorption is saturable and the excess is excreted.
How is it used in supplements?
Vitamin C appears as a standalone product and in immune, collagen, iron and multivitamin formulas. Doses on the market range from 100 mg to well over 1000 mg.

Safety
- Very safe at ordinary intakes. Excess is excreted in urine.
- High doses can cause digestive upset and, in susceptible people, increase the risk of kidney stones.
- People with haemochromatosis should be careful because vitamin C increases iron absorption.
Possible side effects
Diarrhoea, stomach cramps and nausea at gram-level doses.
Interactions
Increases non-haem iron absorption, which is useful in iron deficiency but a caution in iron overload. May affect some laboratory tests, including glucose meters at very high doses.

People with a history of kidney stones, people with iron overload conditions, and people on chemotherapy.
How to choose a supplement containing vitamin c
- A 250–500 mg daily product covers most purposes; 1000 mg tablets are not proportionally more useful.
- Effervescent formats often carry a significant sodium load — check the label if you watch salt intake.
- Buffered forms are worth the extra cost only if plain ascorbic acid upsets your stomach.
