Also known as Glucosamine sulphate, glucosamine hydrochloride
Glucosamine is the longest-standing ingredient in the joint aisle and one of the most argued-over. Its two salt forms are not interchangeable in the research, which explains much of the confusion around it.
Glucosamine is an amino sugar the body uses in building cartilage components. Supplements are usually derived from shellfish shells, with vegetarian versions produced by fermentation.
The two commercial forms — glucosamine sulphate and glucosamine hydrochloride — have been studied unequally, and most of the positive European trial evidence used crystalline glucosamine sulphate.
Glucosamine is a modern nutritional compound with no traditional history.
Evidence, not endorsement. What follows describes published research about the ingredient. It is not a claim about any specific product, and no supplement containing this ingredient may claim to treat a disease.
Trials and reviews have produced conflicting results. Some large trials found no benefit over placebo for knee osteoarthritis pain overall, while subgroup and European studies of crystalline glucosamine sulphate reported modest improvement.
Guideline bodies differ: some recommend against routine use, others allow it as an option for symptomatic relief.
The honest summary is that any average benefit is small and not everyone experiences it.
Glucosamine anchors most joint formulas, typically at 1500 mg per day, usually combined with chondroitin, MSM, collagen or turmeric.
Nausea, heartburn, diarrhoea and, less often, headache.
Reports of increased effect with warfarin exist; anyone anticoagulated should raise it with their clinic.
People on warfarin, people with shellfish allergy, and people with diabetes who monitor closely.

Order pageTrials generally run for at least eight to twelve weeks. Judging after a fortnight is too early, and continuing for a year without any change is not sensible either.
Most products are made from shells rather than flesh, but if you have a significant allergy, choose a fermented vegetarian version and ask a pharmacist.
