Online pharmacy across Africa ranges from chain pharmacy websites to small independent sellers. Six quick checks show you who you are dealing with, and they take about five minutes.
What legitimate looks like
A licensed online pharmacy is a physical premises with an internet ordering channel. It has an address, a business phone number, a named responsible pharmacist and a licence reference.
The simplest safe route in most markets is the online store of a chain you could also walk into.
The six checks
Run these in order before entering any details.
- A physical address you can locate on a map
- A business phone number that answers
- A named pharmacist or a licence reference
- Listings showing ingredients, amounts and pack size
- A stated returns and complaints process
- Payment on delivery, or a payment channel with recourse
When to choose another seller
Choose another seller if you are asked to pay in advance to a personal account, if prescription medicines are offered without a prescription, or if nobody answers the phone.
A good seller is easy to reach and happy to tell you what is in the product and what the total price is.
Protecting your information
An order needs a name, a phone number and a delivery address. It does not need your identity document, your bank card details for a cash-on-delivery order, or your medical history.
Be particularly careful with health information, which is sensitive and worth protecting.
