How to confirm a pharmacy is licensed
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board licenses pharmacies and pharmaceutical premises in Kenya and publishes registers of licensed outlets. A licensed pharmacy displays its licence, and a registered pharmacist or pharmaceutical technologist is present during operating hours.
- A current licence displayed on the premises
- A named, registered professional on duty
- Products with complete labelling, batch numbers and legible expiry dates
- A willingness to answer questions about interactions with your medicines
- Prescription medicines dispensed only against a prescription
Supermarket pharmacy counters
Naivas, Carrefour and Quickmart operate health and beauty sections, with pharmacy counters at larger branches. These are convenient for mainstream vitamins and minerals. Our retailers page covers them in more detail.
Independent chemists
Outside the main chains, independent chemists serve most neighbourhoods and smaller towns. Many are excellent; the variable is the individual outlet rather than the format. Apply the same licence and labelling checks.

- When should I take it — with food, on an empty stomach, morning or night?
- How long before I would expect to notice anything?
- Is there a cheaper product with the same active ingredient at the same dose?

Licensed premises display a Pharmacy and Poisons Board licence and employ a registered pharmacist or pharmaceutical technologist. The Board publishes registers of licensed premises.
Do pharmacies stock the products listed on this site?
