How to Read Clinical Evidence About Supplements Without a Science Degree
You do not need to read papers to judge evidence. You need to know which four questions separate a meaningful finding from a marketing citation, and those questions are simple enough to ask at a counter.
Question one: was it in humans?
A large share of supplement research is done in cells or in rodents. These studies are legitimate science and a normal early step, but they do not tell you what happens in a person.
Doses in cell studies are frequently far higher than anything achievable by swallowing a capsule. When an advertisement says "shown to reduce inflammation", the first question is whether that was in a dish, a mouse or a human being.
Question two: was there a comparison group?
People improve for many reasons — time, expectation, regression of a bad spell, other changes made at the same time. Without a control group taking a placebo, none of that can be separated from the product.
Randomised controlled trials exist precisely to solve this, and they are the standard against which supplement claims should be measured.
Question three: how big and how long?
A trial with twenty participants over two weeks tells you very little. Small studies produce unstable results, and short ones cannot assess anything that takes months to change.
Look for the number of participants and the duration. Joint outcomes need months; glucose markers need at least twelve weeks; a cold study needs a whole season.
Question four: was it the same preparation?
Evidence attaches to specific preparations. A trial on a standardised extract at a defined dose does not transfer to a different extract of the same plant, or to a plain powder.
This is the most common way genuine research gets misused: cited accurately, applied to a product it never studied.
What a systematic review adds
A systematic review gathers all the trials on a question and assesses them together, which reveals patterns no single study shows. Meta-analyses go further and combine the numbers.
They are the best available summary, and they are also where you will find honest statements about heterogeneity, publication bias and study quality — the parts marketing never quotes.

PubMed indexes the biomedical literature and is free to search. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements publishes plain-language fact sheets for nutrients. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health does the same for botanicals. Cochrane publishes systematic reviews with plain-language summaries.

Frequently asked questions
What does "clinically proven" mean on a pack?
On its own, nothing verifiable. Ask which trial, how many participants, how long, and with which preparation. A manufacturer with real evidence can answer.
Is one positive study enough?
Rarely. Single studies are frequently not replicated. A consistent pattern across several trials is what supports a claim.
