How to Compare Supplement Brands Without Getting Lost in Marketing
Brand comparison usually collapses into a choice between packaging designs. This framework replaces that with four checks that produce a defensible answer in a couple of minutes.
Calculate cost per active dose
Take the price, divide by the number of servings in the pack, and note how much of the active ingredient each serving contains. That gives cost per unit of the thing you are actually buying.
This one calculation reorders most shelves. A cheaper pack with half the dose and a two-capsule serving is frequently the most expensive option per gram.
Score disclosure
A brand that states every ingredient amount, the chemical form, the botanical species and the extract ratio has given you everything needed to evaluate it. One that hides behind a proprietary blend has not.
Disclosure is not a guarantee of quality, but its absence guarantees you cannot assess quality. Treat it as a threshold rather than a bonus.
Look for manufacturing and testing signals
Useful signals include a named manufacturing standard, a statement of third-party testing, a physical manufacturer address, and a national registration number where required.
Less useful signals: award badges with no issuing body, "pharmaceutical grade" with no definition, and doctor endorsements without a named, checkable person.
- Named manufacturing standard and site
- Third-party or independent testing statement
- Batch number and expiry on every unit
- National registration number where required
- A working contact route for complaints
Ignore what does not predict quality
Packaging design, price alone, country of origin as a general claim, and the number of ingredients all fail to predict whether a product does what it says.
So does the size of the number on the front. A 1000 mg capsule of a poorly absorbed form is worth less than 300 mg of a well-absorbed one.
Then judge on your own experience — carefully
After the objective comparison, personal response matters. Give one product a fair, defined trial and note the result honestly, including the possibility that nothing changed.
Beware of judging too early, judging during a period when several things changed at once, and continuing out of momentum. A supplement you have taken for two years without noticing anything is a subscription, not a decision.
Frequently asked questions
Are international brands better than local ones?
Not automatically. Judge on disclosure, dose and testing signals. Locally produced moringa or baobab is often fresher and cheaper than an imported equivalent.
What about pharmacy own-brand products?
Often good value. They are typically made by the same contract manufacturers as branded equivalents, with the same disclosure obligations.
